The Indian voter ID card is an identity document issued by the Election Commission of India to adult domiciles of India who have reached the age of 18, which primarily serves as an identity proof for Indian citizens while casting their ballot in the country’s municipal, state, and national elections. It also serves as general identity, address, and age proof for other purposes such as buying a mobile phone SIM card or applying for a passport.
It also serves as a Travel Document to travel to Nepal and Bhutan by Land or Air It is also known as Election Photo Identity Card (EPIC). It was first introduced in 1993 during the tenure of the Chief Election Commissioner.
Earlier issue of Voter ID are Black and white copies but now the Election Commissioner has introduced the colour version of the Voter ID. If you want to upgrade your Black and white Voter ID to Coloured one, follow the following guide.
Before applying you will need the following documents ready
1. Address proof
2. Age proof. (in case you are between the age of 18 and 21 years)
3. Recent passport photograph of yourself.
The following step will guide you to apply for colour Voter ID card online.
Step 1
Visit nvsp.in website and open National Voter’s Service Portal (NVSP).
Step 2
You will need to Click on Voter Portal box from the Homepage, then you will be redirected to a new page having url https://voterportal.eci.gov.in
Step 3
This step involves registration, you can register yourself by Clicking on “Create a new account”. You can use Google account, Facebook Account, Twitter or LinkedIn account to sign up.
Step 4:
After singing up fill up the Form 6, then upload photo and other details then submit it. This is the final step
Note: For future reference like tracking status and others you may need to note down the submission details.
Once the form and other documents are verified and authenticated by Election Commission of India, they will issue a new colour Voter ID.
If you want to apply colour Voter ID card offline, then you will need to locate the nearest e-Seva or Mee Seva office and visit with all the necessary documents and photos. Fill in all the details in Form 6 and submit it.
