Wonder how to grow organically on Instagram? After YouTube, it is Instagram that is turning out to be the next big thing in the internet world. A huge majority is already available on Instagram and most of us are pretty active on it. And, who doesn’t want to be popular on Instagram, and get that check mark next to our profile name?
So, I won’t promise that you’ll grow organically on Instagram right away, rather, it’s a promise that if you try to approach Instagram by keeping these tips in mind, you’ll definitely get bigger than what you currently are. All that, only if your content is interesting, engaging, original/unique and consistent. Always remember, ‘content is the king’. Without great content, you won’t grow very easily. So, now let’s take a look at a few tips that should help you grow organically on Instagram.
1. Go ‘public’/Disable ‘private’
If you really want to grow organically on Instagram, the first thing you need to do is to make the profile/account public. Do not keep it private. This is probably the smallest detail, yet impacts the most. Quite a lot of users keep their accounts private which most commonly, keeps away most of the audience, from clicking the ‘Follow’ button. The first reason being, a huge number of people do not have the time to make a ‘follow-request’ and then wait for that account to accept it and then be able to see your posts. A lot of people don’t even like to take up this much of trouble.
The second reason is that when a person is unable to see your posts/grid already, how would he make a judgment as to whether he would like to see your posts on his daily feed? They should feel a sudden attraction/curiosity on seeing your grid. Only, then would they consider following your account. Keeping it private, very evidently, keeps a huge percentage of users from following. Just ask yourself a question, “If I’m posting something on the internet, it means I want the world to see it, so, what’s the point in keeping the posts hidden?”. It’s as simple as that.
2. Make The Bio and Grid Attractive/Intriguing
The first few things that anyone’s eyes see on your Instagram page are your profile photo, your bio, and your overall grid. So, quite obviously, you must keep these attractive and intriguing.
Firstly, select a very attractive profile picture. It should make people want to see it larger. And, make sure you put a high-quality image-it should not be pixelated/blurry.
The second thing is about writing a bio that would describe you and your character in the most accurate and unique way, and try to make it intriguing. It should make people want to know more about you. And avoid putting in unimportant information like your zodiac sign, date of birth, relationship status, or other such things. Hardly, anyone is interested in such details. Keep the bio simple yet unique/attractive. Do not try to turn your Instagram page into a Linkedin page or a Tinder page.
The third thing is your grid. People might not consider the above mentioned two things, but are definitely going to be affected by this. If your top 9 or 12 posts look attractive and unique, it will definitely make the viewer want to follow you. Think and create a pattern in your grid, i.e. when you post something, keep in mind, how the thumbnail would look and how the vibe of the thumbnail would connect/relate with the vibe of other thumbnails that would be stuck around it in the grid.
These three things are probably the most important aspect of impressing someone in the first go and making them tap on the ‘Follow’ button. And consequently, help you grow on Instagram.
3. Use Hashtags
Instagram allows you to use 30 hashtags in one post that is counted across the caption and the first comment. If you try to put 20 hashtags in the caption and 20 more in the first comment, that comment will not post. So, utilize hashtags to the max. Put in 30 hashtags in your posts. Hashtags are a very effective way of expanding your reach across Instagram.
But, the most important thing is that the hashtags that you use must be absolutely relevant to the photo/video/caption you are posting. Irrelevant hashtags might attract the audience temporarily, but will not make them your permanent followers, hence, no real growth on your Instagram profile.
So, utilize hashtags, because, after recent updates of the app, you can also follow hashtags. And, if you put relevant hashtags in your posts, you’ll definitely, reach a bigger audience.
4. Tag Relevant People/Pages
In your photos/videos, Instagram lets you tag a maximum of 20 people. Use this feature to tag bigger pages on Instagram that are of relevant fields. If you succeed in attracting one or more big page’s attention to your post, it can help you reach more people. And that is because nowadays, a lot of pages, that have a bigger audience and reach, feature smaller creators/profiles/accounts on their own pages.
So, that can help you reach a bigger number of people and thereby, increasing the chance of gaining more followers. But, keep in mind that it is not for sure that they will definitely feature your account/post. That is rather a rare thing and you need to be really good and creative with your posts and your profile overall.

5. Write Unique Captions
With creative and unique posts, you also need to write a good caption. Try to make your captions simple and precise, but at the same time, creative, attractive and informative. You should try to make people be equally interested in reading the captions of your posts. Try to make them laugh with smart humor, or motivate them, or provide interesting information, and so on.
Another important thing is to engage your audience. You can do that by asking questions in the captions, or by asking them to tag someone for some reason or the other, or by asking them to post their opinions about your post or the topic that you’ve discussed in the caption. All of this completely depends on how creative you can get in using these tips to increase engagement on your posts and account in general.
6. Post Interactive And Interesting Stories And Highlights
Instagram has included the feature of posting stories, that last for 24 hours and are then saved in the ‘Archive’ folder. But, if you want to save your stories for the public to see, you can save them right below your bio as ‘Highlights’. So, make efforts to be as creative as possible with your stories and highlights. Make your stories engaging-put in polls, ask questions, use GIF’s, use the ‘Ask Me A Question’ widget, and so on. Keep your audience engaged with you. If you are a photographer, you can post photos that might disturb your grid’s pattern, in your stories.
So, all I’m trying to say is that you should be regularly posting stories, make them attractive and engaging, and save the best/most interesting ones as your highlights. Again, I cannot give you a step-by-step guide on how to run your account, so, you have to explore your creativity and start working smartly.

7. Promotions And Ads
Not every single time would your post reach a huge number of audience. Even if you use hashtags, tag big names on Instagram on your photos/videos, and all of that, it cannot be guaranteed that you’ll reach a huge number of people. So, what you can do is promote your posts. Now, how do you do that? To promote your photos or videos, you:
- need to have a business account;
- need to pay a certain amount of money, which depends upon the number of days the promotion would run on Instagram and the number of people it would, roughly, reach;
- and you need to select the most attractive photo/video that you think would definitely attract people to check out your account through that ad/promotion.
You can also put ads on stories in a similar process. Use this feature to reach more people and hence, grow organically on Instagram.
8. Collaborations
This is another process to reach to a bigger audience. You can reach out to bigger accounts related to your field to collab with you on different projects. Find and create exciting projects that you would present to the creator with a bigger audience base. Once they agree to work with you and feature you on their page, you will have directly reached the entire audience of their page. And that will lead that audience to your page and hence, increasing the chance to gain followers in big numbers in one go.
One thing that you need to keep in mind is that bigger creators might not always respond or might not respond right away. So, in order to grow organically on Instagram, you need to have a lot of patience-like a lot!
9. Consistency
You cannot grow organically on Instagram, until and unless you are consistently posting. Be it photos, videos, or stories, just keep posting regularly. There are even times of days in the week, that are more favorable to make posts. Take a look at the graph below, for reference. If you are inconsistent in your posting routine, you’ll lose followers. So, always be consistent with your posting, if you really want to grow organically on Instagram.
So, that was the list folks. I hope you benefit from this post. I believe you definitely will if you genuinely follow these tips. To grow organically on Instagram, you must keep these 9 tips in your mind and work in the right direction.
